A Wide Range of Procedures

Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery is a branch of surgery that serves as a bridge between medicine and dentistry. We treat a wide range of birth deformities, diseases and trauma of the face, jaws, and mouth. This includes wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, jaw deformity, facial bone fractures, temporomandibular joint problems, facial pain, facial tumours, head and neck cancers, cleft lip and palate, facial rejuvenation, and sleep surgery.

Oral Surgery

Oral surgery include procedures such as third molar extractions and dental implants. Third molars are the last teeth to erupt into the mouth making them prone to impaction. This means that there is not enough space in the mouth for them to be accommodated. They are also the most common teeth to be affected by tumours and cysts, therefore may require removal. Sometimes tooth loss is unavoidable. This might affect your ability to chew or smile. Dental implants are a well-established treatment option to replace lost teeth. They are made from medical grade titanium or zirconium and are implanted in your jawbone. A dental crown is then screwed or cemented onto the implant, replacing the missing tooth/teeth.

TMJ Surgery

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems

The temporomandibular joint allows the lower jaw to move, facilitating speech, chewing, and swallowing. Clenching your teeth, sports injuries, previous jaw surgery or systemic arthritis might cause a painful joint with or without clicking. This can be treated with a wide range of surgical or non-surgical options. Facial Pain: Facial pain can originate from any area in the head and neck for a multitude of reasons. This includes chronic headaches, burning pain affecting the face or jaws, dental pain, and joint disorders. Maxillofacial surgeons have a wide range of surgical and non-surgical treatment options to relieve your pain and discomfort.

Cleft Lip and Palate

Cleft lip and palate usually form in isolation from other health conditions, but can associated with other problems as part of a syndrome. Cleft lip and palate is common, with an incidence rate of 1:700. These abnormalities are repaired in a systematic approach with operations staged throughout childhood and adolescence. As with head and neck cancer, cleft lip and palate abnormalities are treated with a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team approach.

Orthognathic surgery

Jaw Deformity (Orthognathic surgery)

The upper and/or lower jaw might be either too large or too small resulting in a underbite or overbite. A small lower jaw can makes the chin appear small and receded, affecting the chin-throat contour. Similarly, a small upper jaw often results in a ‘droopy’ looking nose. Orthognathic surgery is often completed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to achieve an aesthetic pleasing smile and symmetric facial profile.

Facial Tumours

A wide range of non-cancerous tumours can affect the face and jaw. Some lesions are locally aggressive despite being non-cancerous and require treatment. Maxillofacial surgeons are trained to remove these tumours and restore the jawbone and teeth to its former shape and function.

Facial Rejuvenation

Facial Rejuvenation (mini ‘facelift’)

The face loses elastin fibers with aging, resulting in wrinkles and droopy skin. Facial rejuvenation procedures can include botulinum toxin and collagen filler injections. Surgery to tighten the facial skin can restore the youthfulness to a face and restore confidence.

Facial Trauma

Facial bone and jaw fractures can occur as a result of sports injuries, work-related accidents, motor vehicle accidents etc. Untreated facial injuries may result in poor bite, visual disturbances, or facial asymmetry. Facial bone and jaw fractures are treated by aligning the bones and teeth and securing them with rigid plates and screws.

Head and Neck Cancer

Cancer can develop in the mouth, throat, nose and skin of the scalp and face. These cancers have a propensity to spread to the glands in the neck. The treatment options include a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Head and neck cancers are treated by Multi-disciplinary teams [MDTs] to achieve the best possible outcomes. We are proud to be part of both the private and public sector MDT’s, offering world class services to our patients.

Sleep Surgery

Some patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea might greatly benefit from jaw advancement surgery to “open the airway”. Upper and lower jaw surgery has a well-established track record in successfully treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
